Dribbble Acquires Crew as Cofounder Shifts Focus to Spinoff Unsplash

Dribbble, an online community for showcasing user-made artwork, has acquired Crew, a platform for creating design and development projects.

Crew was acquired because its cofounders have found a new passion in Unsplash, an online photography library that originally spun out of crew.

“Unsplash has been growing at an incredible rate and we were doing it a disservice if we didn’t give it more focus,” says Mikael Cho, CEO. “Crew, meanwhile, was also growing but not at the rate we needed it to.”

So Cho spoke to Andrew Wilkinson, founder of the design agency MetaLab, who had bought a majority stake in Dribbble. Then he spoke to Zach Onisko, Dribbble’s CEO. Visions aligned and now forces have been joined.

“I know Crew and my Crew teammates are continuing on to do great things,” says Cho. “I’m proud to have had the chance to work alongside them and I know there will be many more great things to come.”

Crew will continue to run mostly as is, according to Cho.

“As for Unsplash, the sale of Crew means we move forward with even more focus,” he says. “We have big things in the works along with an amazing squad.”
